Born in 1980 in Lviv, Ukraine. Studied art in Ukraine, Italy and US. Primary training was done in oil, but went on to work in watercolor as a more "child-friendly" medium. I work mostly with imaginary subjects, fairy-tales, legends, songs. I incorporate highly stylized images with realistic ones in order to get intricate compositions. I have also studied Iconography for almost 4 years, and it has a great influence on my work.
Dmitri Vladislavovich Andreyev was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1964.
He studied at the Youth Art School #10 and the Mukhina Institute for Design
and Applied Art, and was employed for several years at various artist's
cooperatives doing freelance work, primarily in stained glass.
Increasingly drawn to the ancient spiritual discipline of iconography,
Dmitri was reunited with his father, master iconographer Vladislav
Andrejev, in the United States in 1990. In 1991, having decided to commit
himself to iconography, he returned to the United States permanently, to
begin an intensive apprenticeship under his father.
In 1994 Dmitri established the Iconography Studio at the Cathedral of the
Holy Virgin Protection in New York City. He has been an instructor with the
Prosopon School of Iconology since its blessing in 2000, giving regular
lectures and workshops on iconwriting and iconology around the country.
While continuing to work on traditional, portable icons, Dmitri has spent
much of the last several years on large-scale wall-painting in churches in
Alaska, Vermont, Minnesota and New York City. His icons are in numerous
churches and private collections here and abroad.
